Hello Folks.  New forum member/poster.  My history is this:  I have owned Deluxe V12 for a few years with little usage.  Last year, I took two classes in AutoCAD 2010/2011 & got fairly comfortable with it.  My student license expired so I am looking to get something on a low budget.  Jason at IMSI gave me a good upgrade price for Deluxe V18.  I also have an opportunity to purchase a used Pro V15 for just a few bucks more.  I really can't justify spending more than what either of these will cost me.

My intended usage is to develop 2D floor plans for work & to explore CAD as a hobby.  So, V15 Pro or V18 Deluxe?  Or, wait for V19 Deluxe?

Thanks in advance - Dave

Welcome to the forum, I am like you in many ways, I bought a duluxe 14 when it first came out to draw up furniture and cabinets plans. I had just retired and was going to do cabinet and furniture on the side. These had been hobbies of mine for many years. I had always drawen them up on a drafting board before and was looking for a better way. I had decided to go with deluxe for the price but to be honest now I wish I would have went with what WD just said. It sound like you have a big head start on me because before I bought deluxe 14 I new nothing about CAD. I have learned to enjoy it and when ever I can afford it I will do what WD said. But for now I am stuck with Deluxe So in the long run I would go with PLatium Carroll

Thanks for the quick replies Carroll & WD.  Unfortunately, Platinum is not an option as my budget is limited.  So, my rephrased question is this:  Would you purchase the latest & greatest Deluxe or a 3 or 4 year old Pro version?

Thanks Don.  That's an attractive site.  I'd like to think that Pro v15 is no where near obsolescence.

I'd say it has the capability to do the 2d drawings you want....if you ever want to investigate 3d have a look at Don Cheke's website to see what he has created using v.15 pro

re: …V15 Pro or V18 Deluxe?  Or, wait for V19 Deluxe?

If you can get an older Pro edition for the price of a current Deluxe edition, get the Pro Platinum. The extra tools and features are really worth it. The Window and Door features in V15 Style Manager are similar to what is now available, though quite different than what V12 is like. V12 was their first real foray into Architectural tools, so they're fairly simple. They got more complicated over the years as they were made to be similar to AutoCAD Architecture tools.

There are different "Pro" editions. Pro Platinum has everything, whereas in Pro Basic, the Architectural tools aren't that much different than what is found in the Deluxe editions.

Thanks John.  That's useful information to know about some specific architectural differences between Pro & Platinum.

Here's more info on the Architecture tools in the Wiki. See Door Types and Window Types to see the different Types and Shapes available in Platinum. Deluxe and Pro Basic only give you 2 Types of each and no Shapes. Much of the Property info for Doors and Windows was moved from the Property dialog to relevant sections in the Style Manager palette; i.e. Window Styles.

Along with the basic Walls, Roof, Doors-n-Windows, V15 Platinum has Stairs, Terrain, Schedules and Slabs, plus Profile tools to customize Doors and Windows. See the Architectural Tools page in the Wiki.

See also the Toolbars page for picture of all the toolbars in V15. You may need to scroll down.
