Removing unwanted lines in paperspace

I asked this before on the olde forum....

I have created a named view.
I insert the view into the paperspace and do a hidden line drawing.
(If I insert through the drafting pallet the drawning looks like caca--missing outlines)
The hidden line drawing contains a number of stray lines that need to be removed.

When I asked last time, I was told (I thought) to explode the drawing.

Then life intervened. Now back to it. The explode option is grayed out when I select. So I must have lost something in the translation. What do I do here?

In order to explode a Viewport, it must be rendered. Also, I think -- not sure of this -- that the options to show "Renderable objects" and "Nonrenderable objects" must NOT be enabled.
