V17

I have reviewed the available upgrade information and an intrigued by the addition of Redway 3D.  All of the info indicates it's usage in wireframe, which is nice.  However I see no mention of supporting any other render modes.

I guess I was hoping for an upgrade to lightworks or another render engine (Redway 3D included), that would improve render times in quality/advanced modes.

Am I missing something in the render improvements?

No Redway render support yet, no multi processor support yet and no 64 bit version.

A trial version is now available if you want to give it a whirl: http://www.turbocad.com/TurboCAD/FreeTrials/tabid/85/Default.aspx

I understand that the bugs from version 16 will be fixed on version 17, but will the bugs be fixed for 16 via patches or updates.  I don't want to pay more than 200 dollars for features that should have worked correctly in 16.

From my experience, when a new version comes out no previous version is ever updated, so if it got fixed it will be in the new version.

Hi Don,
Isn't there free trial for TurboCAD Platinum Pro V17?

Found my first little bug/quirk with TC17.  I have a file I created in 16 that has about 40 X-Refs that I was hoping would open in 17 so that the bugs from 16 would automatically fix themselves.

However when I tried to open it I got a crash with no message about 1 minute into loading it.  After a little bit of playing with trying to detach some of the X-Refs in 16, I was able to open in 17 when I got it down to 10 X-refs, but no more.

I then took that file in which there were 10 X-Refs, and created another in 17, saved and reopened it, and it worked fine.  I added a 12th, saved, and tried to open, but this time I got the same crash.

I'm going to guess nobody has any idea what could be happening here, and I bet it's pretty hard and time consuming to recreate.  But I just wanted to throw it out there.  Looks like I'll be in 16 for a little while longer which sucks because 17 fixed one of my biggest gripes.

What did v17 fix for you?

The issue I had was some parts created using shell, bend, fillet, would not come in with the features being performed if they were X-Reffed a second time.  Say I built a part with these features, then created a sub assembly that reference that initial file, then put that sub assembly in a larger assembly, the features such as shell, bend etc. would not come through.

This is no longer an issue in 17.

Some more info on my earlier problem, now that I've created a 12th X-Ref in V17, I can now no longer open that file in V16.2.  So be aware that they're not very compatible together.

Also I was able to open a file in V17 with more than 10 references from a file I had previously created in V16.2.  So it may not necessarily be a number of X-Ref issue.

No Redway render support yet, no multi processor support yet and no 64 bit version.

In return, drawing performance directly depends on the video-card’s power. The more shader blocks you have on your video-card – the faster TurboCAD 17 draws in the Redsdk mode. It’s no less than view changing, selecting, etc. Since long time ago, our users want to have a possibility of buying more expensive powerful hardware and having better performance. TurboCAD 17 allows them to do that. Taking into the consideration SLI and CrossFire support, they can assemble a good workstation.

Did you select the V16 option when saving in V17?

I did not, which was my fault.  At the time, when I was just playing around trying to figure out what was the issue, I had not seen the option for saving as V16.2.  Is it official anything created in V17 will not open in any previous version unless saved specifically for that version or previous?

No big deal for now though.

Any version of TurboCAD will only save TCW's back to the immediate previous version, but not any farther (V16 to V15, V12 to V11, etc.). If you want to save a file from V17 to V15 (or earlier) you have to use the DWG format.

No Redway hidden line render? I thought this was the whole point of it.

Do I understand correctly that V17 "upgrade" is a free-standing install so that any V16 Platinum features I have will go away if I upgrade to V17 Pro Plain Vanilla?

(As things stand I have 9.1, 11, 12, 14, 15, and 16 on my computer so I can migrate drawings down to be compatible with clients' older versions.  Too many funky things happen when I save as DXF or DWG.)

It's the same as before, nothing is taken away from any standing installations. All my older versions operate as before.

However, the 'extra' Platinum features will not appear in the new version of TC. They would have to be (re)purchased.

Paul.
