Lighting is my nemesis also, I don't think we are alone! Exterior renders are easier to light than interior ones.
It is a matter of time and test rendering. I use real photographs as a colour, lighting and shadow reference. Doing this takes away some of the guess work, certainly with colours. I often use a photo editing package to get the RGB values for the colours as this saves a lot of time tweaking in TC.
I used Nick's photo initially to get a idea of colours.
