Title: Unbend Face2Face Loft
Post by: Jeffin90620 on June 04, 2016, 02:17:50 PM
I wish there was an option to specify that a Face2Face Loft between two appropriate faces (same cross-section, one essentially rotated from the other) be constructed in such a way that the resulting object could be unbent.

Upon reflection, I can understand if restrictions need to be placed on the operation if Unbend is to function, such as no Twist, perhaps only parallel facets, or a switch selection to specify the restriction.

Unbend only unbends solid cylindrical sections with coaxial edges, and it doesn't even recognise the offset face of a shelled section (the back side of the bend area).  Unfold Face is more liberal, dealing with conical sections (of which unbend sections are a subset, but Unbend needs a solid, while Unfold Face only needs, well, a face) with no restrictions on trim edges, but neither deal with ruled surfaces generally.  Ruled surfaces are developable single-curvature surfaces, but there's no way to constrain F2F lofting to a general ruled surface, let alone a ruled surface that's a guaranteed conical or cylindrical section.

Well, now, anyway.  It would be nice to change this in a future version.

Unbend only unbends solid cylindrical sections with coaxial edges...

That explains why I could not unfold an object with a variable (even though symmetric) width.

My terminology's wrong, Jeff.  Should be edges parallel to axis....my error.

Doesn't sound right, Jeff. Can you post a drawing of the object?
