Title: Saving to DXF and DWG issues - from TC Deluxe 22.2
Post by: nadsab on March 30, 2016, 01:04:56 PM
I just converted some TC V 22.2 files to both DWG and DXF formats for someone who is opening them up in a different CAD/CAM application at his machine shop.

I tried opening up the files I converted in Turbocad, and they came out all wire framed and apparently garbled up.

Am I supposed to use the "Extract to" and "Extract from" commands instead of doing a "Save as" on  DWG or DXF formats or something like that?

Thanks.

"Save as" should work, and usually does. Not sure why it failed in your case.

It saves the file fine.  The problem is, when I open the file up, the extrusions appear as wireframe.

Can you post one of those problem files?

Hi,

Sure thanks.  File attached...

I also tried posting  a DXF version of the same file but your forum software will not allow it.

I guess the concern is, if I save a file as a DXF or DWG from within Turbocad, and then open the same file up in TC and it is all wireframed and I can not see the file in hidden line mode, it most likely looks as bad or worse in a non turbocad application.

For some reason it all appears to be 3D polylines instead of a solid or surface model. In the save as DXF setup is explode all blocks checked?  Just a guess on my part.

When I go a File>Save as, there is no "explode all blocks" option that appears in the "Save as" window.

I also checked the TC manual, and there is nothing in there with the phrase "explode all blocks."

You did a really nice job creating that file in Deluxe, nadsab.  :)
Deluxe created a beautiful 3d smooth mesh object on the dwg "save as"
It converted nicely to a solid in platinum, with volume.
So what's the problem  ;D
What type of file is needed for the cad/cam?

Thanks!

The problem is, when I open the DXF or DWG and then switch to hidden line mode, the converted file stays in wireframe mode...

I really don't know if that is a problem for the person with the other CAD/CAM application - I don't think they have opened up the files yet. I know I can't view it as it appeared before when it was in .TCW format...

Not sure which CAD/CAM he is using I have an email in to him to find out...

Just found out the machine shop uses an application called "Master Cam".  The most recent version.

OK I visited the machine shop - the shop uses Mastercam X9 which is version 19, the latest version.

The gentleman tried opening up both the turbocad drawings I saved in both DWG and DXF format, which his application can read.   The only parts of my drawing we could view, were the 2D polylines I drew for outlines of the extrusions.  None of the 3D extrusions in the drawing were visible.  And he had all the layers turned on.

Anyone have any suggestions?  Any experience porting TC Deluxe drawings over to Master Cam?

I'm having the same problem, did you ever figure it out?

Did they look like this?  If so, then you're in RedSDK mode and the Transparency setting is not zero.

When I loaded the file, each object is reported as Smooth Mesh.  What were your settings for DWG?

Yes - I upgraded to Pro Platinum, so that I could export to STEP format which Mastercam reads.

Deluxe is not capable of solid surface modeling, which is required if you want to export STEP files to any big league CAM application - or so the Tech Support folks at TC told me on the phone weeks ago.
