Is there a way to lock the object/(point of intrest) on the screen during zoom in/out?

Basically, no.  At least, I don't know of one.
I use a  wheel mouse.  I put the (mouse) cursor on the point of interest and roll the wheel to zoom. The zoom centre is always at the mouse cursor.
Works for me...

Giving this some thought, one way would be to move the cursor out of the drawing area and then roll the mouse wheel or use the plus/minus keys in the numeric keypad to zoom in/out.

Most of the time I usually hold the Ctrl key and drag the wheel towards the edge of the drawing area for a smooth zoom in.

Place the cursor at the point of interest and lean on the + key to zoom in, or on -the - key to zoom out. Screen will center on the cursor and stay there as it zooms.
