I use 3D subtract a lot, but here it gives me an error message (see attachment).  I need to make the subtract work.  Help?

It is possible that a vertex of one object overlaps a vertex in the other object.  You could try moving one of the objects a small distance in any direction (use the Inspector Bar) and try to subtract again.

I tried moving the curve as you suggested -- no help.  I found that only one curve whad a problem.  Then I looked critically at my curves.  I had some sharp points on my 2D curves.  When I converted one curve from polyline to curve, the TC curve result overlapped itself.  This prevented the 3D operations from working!

What to learn:  Watch all points on closed curves and make sure they do not overlap.

That's excellent advice. Overlapping points are frighteningly easy to create and difficult to diagnose and correct.
