Had good success with using a twisted extrude of multiple 3mm circles as a compound base.
I used a Rail Sweep with multiple circles, added a twist, then colored the result a metallic copper.
That's a good technique. It's a little simpler if the profile is a single "cloverleaf" shape. And sometimes the sweep path has to be adjusted to keep a constant twist rate. These points are discussed on Pages 12-13 and 16-17 of my article on "Creating Springs in TurboCAD," posted several years ago in the Tips and Tricks pages.
