Another roof slab question
Read 826 times
* August 10, 2018, 07:30:43 AM
If I split a roof slab into a few pieces and then join a couple of them back together it turns into a tc surface instead of a roof slab. I kind of need it to be a roof slab so I can get the walls to modify to it. Is there a way to convert the tc surface back into a roof slab?

No and yes :)
You will have to work a bit more with it, when it is a TC Surface, explode it 1 time and delete all the Polyline you dont want, take the full Profile on the underside and make that in to a New roof slab.

But why dont you use Edit tool to add more node's and move them to fit the shape you want on the roof slab, and you can also just draw a polyline that follow the roof and then use Top Wall modifier

If you are going to explode the surface and make a new slab it saves time if you use a slab with a 0 thickness.
But editing nodes on the slab is a quicker way to go.

Thanks, Yes the nodes are probably the best way to go but I just thought I might be missing something obvious. What's interesting to me every time is there seems to be no rhyme or reason, sometimes I can slice and dice a roof slab and rejoin it and it's still a roof slab and sometimes it just decides now is the time to turn into something else... ;D

OK so when I draw a poly line under the former roof slab that had then become a tc surface or whatever, and then convert to a roof slab I have a wedge shaped gap at the top between it and the old roof slab that cannot be filled. I have never been able to get the miter slab tool to work even when the slabs are overlapping and it is not working here either. If I create a wedge to fit there and then join them the roof slab I would change it to a tc surface again and I can't add nodes to the top plane of the roof slab to stretch it out... so not sure what to do with this. I have attached a drawing, maybe someone has a suggestion.
Thanks

Thats no problem to fix.
The upper part of the roof you can Miter and the lovest you change from Squere to Plumb and it close fine, you can of course also change to Plumb on the upper one as well.

To change from Squere to Plumb, Select the roofslab with Edit Tool, press shift and Select the bottom part of the "vally" then there will open a New menu Down on Inspector bar, just click on the small Arrow next to Squere and then change it to Plumb.

Thanks! Great video. I don't know how you get the miter tool to work like that. Whenever I try, it lets me select the first roof slab but when I try to select the second one I get a message that says "There is no appropriate solution". I used to just get nothing on this so getting a message is some improvement I guess. I don't know why it doesn't work, I am using the same drawing as you are.

The second method you showed worked well. I didn't realize you could do that.

Thanks!

Now I can't get the second method to work either. I did it yesterday and it worked but I had to redraw that roof slab again and now it won't work. I can't get that menu to come up where I can change the edge to plumb. I have watched the video many times and i don't see what I am doing wrong. If I go back to the drawing I posted here I can get it to work on  that drawing but on my other drawing where I have the exact same situation, I can't get it to work. When I hit shift and try to select the bottom edge there it just asks me which roof slab I want to select.

First select it with the Edit Tool, then press Shift and then click on the bottom line should open the menu.
Have you try'd to close and reopen TC/ drawing, maybe something just hang in the system.
If that not work, try to copy or extract the roofslabs to a New from scratch drawing and see if it help.

OK I deleted the whole roof and redrew it. I then had to break it into pieces, slice and dice, to get the shape back. Then exploded it and drew a poly line on the lower surface and converted it to a roof slab and tried again to change that upper angle to plumb by going to edit tool, selecting the slab and then holding the shift key down and clicking on that edge and... wait for it... nothing happens... I can't make this work on the drawing I am working on. If I go back to the sample drawing that I attached earlier I can get it to work fine but in this drawing, nothing. I have restarted program and computer numerous times... still the same result. The roof miter tool has never worked for me. It does absolute nothing.  Cussing out loud at my screen doesn't seem to do anything either.

John,
If you're working in redsdk mode try switching to GDI mode. Maybe it's a graphic glitch.
Your sample drawing worked fine for me.

There is  a toggle for the mitre tool that might be causing your issue.
"by intersection" - it looks like 2 crossing slabs
This defaults to a situation where the slabs over lap. Turn this off and try the mitre tool again. When "by intersection " is turned off you need to select
the 2 edges that you want to move.

Another issue
Often when the bottom of the 2 slabs, to be mitred, just touch it is difficult to select both slabs without realizing it you select the same slab twice. When this happens I edit node and move the edge of the slab away before using the mitre tool.

I already backed up out of the situation so there is not a drawing to send at this point.
I will keep all these suggestions in mind going forward and see if I can figure another way. I'm sure I will be revisiting this soon enough.
 I appreciate all the help.

Thanks!
