Using tcw2017PP I can get the mass of an object in cubic mm, from this data can the weight of the object be calculated when you know the general mass of say aluminium?

The 3D object is just a standard aluminium extrusion, with a few minor changes added that are just solid rod ( cylinders )?

Hi Daz,

just multiply mass of the stuff (aluminium) per unit volume, which will give you it's approximate/near-enough-weight-for-your-purposes(!), at sea level/the equator.   ;D
Don't assume TC gives you the correct volume, without doing a rough check first.
Make sure your units for mass and volume match.   ;)

Tim when you say 'Don't assume TC gives you the correct volume, without doing a rough check first' why?
Is likely to be inaccurate?
Later this morning my time I will post a couple of simple examples to test and evaluate prior to more discrete measuring.

Got this calc and I do think its correct:
ALUMINUM SHEET
WEIGHT (KGS) = LENGTH (MM) X BREADTH (MM) X 0. 00000026 X THICKNESS
Example – The weight of Aluminum sheet of thickness 1 mm, length 2500mm and breadth 1250 mm shall be
2500x1250X 0.0000026 X 1 = 8.12 Kgs/Sheet

Okay so when I say that Ive got an object measured in cubic mm whats the conversion process or should I just do the maths measurement on the profile/object and then calc?

Post some examples soon.

Aluminium is 2699  kg pr m3, so 0,002699 kg pr mm3 maybe

Hi Daz,

TurboCAD is invariably correct.   8)
However, like all things it's prone to aberrations, for want of a better word, which may produce inaccurate information.
It is always good practice to look at the answer given and make a judgement about whether it looks reasonable to you.
Do a quick manual calculation if needs be.
There is always a chance of error and it is your choice/obligation to check that all is well, IMHO.

Okay so I realise that the difference is just 0.014661 cubic mm³ but is there any reason why the difference. I guess in the long run that a difference of 0.014 cubic mm³ is mostly insignificant but over time this will add up and I could state that the error is 'blah blah'.

The 1st calc in the dialog editor is from the complete profile extruded to 50mm, the other calcs are from the individual parts.

TC is limited by ACIS faceting,  reducing the ACIS relative accuracy to 0.001 ( giving 16393.14583) gets closer to my calculated volume of 16393.141652 (rounded).

The best I got was to export as a dwg and checking in AutoDesk Trueview,  this gives a volume of 16393.141653.

Always triple check figures if they are critical

Makes sense what you say Andy, when you zoom in a long way I can see how the faceting is going to effect the calcs so thanks for checking.

Aluminium is 2699  kg pr m3, so 0,002699 kg pr mm3 maybe

A mm is 1/1000 of a meter, so a cubic mm (mm3) is (1/1000)3 of a cubic meter (m3), or 10-3 cubed = 10-9.

So, 2699 Kg/m3 = 2.699 x 103 Kg/m3 x 10-9 m3/mm3 = 2.699 x 103 x 10-9 Kg = 2.699 x 10-6 Kg/mm3.

Of course, if you want the weight in grams, then multiply by 1000.
