Hello again.

I have failed in my wish to convert tcw (or dwg) to pdf and show the layers in pdf; is this possible.

I attach a tcw file that I have used and it converts via the print command to pdf printer or/and via the save as to pdf but neither procedure gives me the tcw (v messy at present) layers in pdf,,,am I expecting to much ???

When you save as pdf. Use the adobe portable document format and under set up there is an option to save layers.

Hi Nikki

Regrettably that doesn't work for me.
When I do a 'save as' I have 3 pdf selectors being Adobe us , Adobe prc and adobe portable.

Only the 3rd being Adobe Portable works for me.
It gives me an empty layer box.

I use TCW 2018 Pro with Adobe Acrobat X1 Pro

I doupt you use v 2018, as far as i know it's not released yet :)
Your signature say 2016 and there it is like Nikki say, you have to open the setup after choose Adobe Portal, check layers and you will get it.
Maybe you will need to open layerstructure in Adobe when open it there, that i dont remember anymore

You are so correct ...I am in front on some things but behind on others.

I cannot bring up the box in your screen grab titled "PDF File Exporter".

I have looked in:
(1) File-Print- with Adobe Portable doc shown
(2) File-Save as- Adobe Portable doc

A simple idiot (me) proof step by step procedure would be of great help.

That Box open when you click on setup.

with TC drawing open
1 Save AS
2 click on filetype
2 Select Adobe Portable dokument
4 click on setup down in rigth corner of that menu
5 click/ check for layers near bottom left side in that menu
6 click OK
7 Give it a new name if you want something different then what is there already and click Save
Finish

Just thought I'd add to Torfinn's comment.

    Are we there yet?

Dear Torfinn & all other helpful souls

Thank you.

The bottom right setup button is a place I had not visited.

And of course it works, thank you.

If I can ever help any one with self build development within England's planning system I will do so and perhaps prove that I am not always needing to ask for help.

Regards
Richard

After you've selected a file format, "Alt+U" will also open the "Setup" dialog.

TCW 2016 Pro 64bit...Adobe Acrobat X1 Pro...Win10.....(to many coffees)

Once again I need to ask for your collective help on "Save As" TCW to PDF with layers.

I am carrying out Torfinns and many others others earlier advice on this thread which I thank you for but I am only getting a very small "BLOB"  (see pics) the layers however are available.

I have tried the "Save As" conversion with a dwg file also but with the same results.
I have tried Dora pdf writer as well as Acrobat pro X1 to see if it will help but no joy.

I attach the original tcw file and some screen pics which may be helpful in finding out what I am doing wrong at this time.

Can anyone help on this one please

I got the same problem as you did, but figured out a workaround.
  • Create a Named View of the plan in Modelspace.
  • Create a new Paperspace and change both paper settings to "A3" Portrait (right-click on Printer icon).
  • Insert a Viewport using the new Named View to the corners of the paper.
  • Checkmark the "Scale is Fixed" option in the Selection Info palette.
  • Change the "Scale" so the view fits the viewport.
Another  option, use "Model Space(Floating) (Ctrl+Alt+F) to open the viewport in Modelspace, then World Plan.
Click outside the viewport to return to Paperspace.
  • Now save as PDF.

It generated a 6MB PDF (with all the layers). I re-saved it in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro under a new name and it reduced the file to 1MB (attached below).

John R

Thank you for your wonderful reply and comprehensive work.
The pdf is excellent and so small.
I need to follow your work sequence on another dwg file to see if I understand your workaround.
A lot of your terminology as an infrequent TCW user is strange to me but I will look and try.

Again thank you for your help.
