On my mobile atm so Im limited to a short post. Can I map the standard colours in say the properties section to their respective 3 colour values. Eg:
R = 144
G = 144
B = 144
That way I can build some basic colour variations

There's two ways,

Any tool the colour drop down, make sure a colour is selected, then you can adjust see ColourDropDown.png.  When finished click add.

Open the Colour Pallet under Program set up, type a new name in the colour name box, The New button will now be selectable, click it, set your colour, click ok, see ColourPallet.png.

I don't remember if the first way allows you to name the colour.

I realized afterwards that is not what you wanted........  If your material is not using a texture see RenderColour.png That is about all I know as materials go......

re: …build some basic colour variations…

You could try this MAT file that contains all the TurboCAD colors in a Matte, Glass and some Glossy finishes for LightWorks and RedSDK.

Go to "Options / Materials / Load Materials" to load them into yours Materials. It'll give you a bit of a head start. The file is readable in Notepad or Wordpad. The TXT extension can be removed, so you just have a MAT extension.
You have to make your own thumbnails.
