Transferring Drawings
Read 742 times

I'm having an issue with transferring a drawing which I've started in TC2017 on my laptop, to my desk, top via a flash drive.
My problem is that even though the dwg is saved as a TC2017 dwg, the desktop tries to open it as a TC2015 dwg
I've changed properties to open in 2017, but still won't open.I've uninstalled 2015. now the drawing won't open at all on the desk top.
The only difference Ive noticed is that the dwg im trying to open has been saved at the laptop end as a TCW file, whilst my other saved drw's on the desk top are TCT files.

Do you mean .DWG file type or is it short for drawings, and if DWG is there any reason why are you not transferring the .tcw file between laptop and desktop,  It sound like you are trying to open the file by double clicking it, if so - I'd advise don't do that, open TC (or whatever program you are trying to open the file in) and navigate to the file, the double clicking thing is handled by MS windows which can (and does) get things wrong.

.tct files are TC template files,  normally read-only from the template folder,  whilst they work the same as .tcw its normal practice to use tct for loading and saving templates, and tcw for drawings, saving to DWG, DXF etc. when necessary for sharing the files.

dwg short for drawing , I've tried opening from Turbocad itself & by double clicking to no avail.
the drawing shows up in the TC2017 drawings folder (when accessed from explorer) as a TC2017 Drawing,, but  is missing when the same folder is opened from within TC2017 itself, ( when accessed from the -open drawing- in the file tab..
I've tried saving the drawing in .TCT, same thing.
for some reason turbocad is trying to open the drawing in TC2015 even though its been saved as TC2017.
The software on my Desktop is TC2015, TC2017, & I also have the Turbo pdf installed.

hmm, That's a new one on me, I've never had that happen, I've always been able to see file names even if the file won't open..

When I go to File - open file dialog, and expand the 'File of type' dropdown, (which I assume was correct for the file type),  go to the bottom, clicking on 'All Files', it shows every single file in the folder even if its nothing to do with TC, if yours is not doing, I'm Sorry - I'm out of ideas,

Would you care to post that drawing? Maybe someone here can make it work.

Hi
Yes that would be great if someone could, I've attached the Drawing.
It will be interesting to see if it opens as a TC2015 or TC2017 with someone else.
Thanks

It opens just fine in my 2017 installation. I saved it in 2015 format, and that version of the drawing opens just fine in my 2015 installation. I'm attaching the 2015-format version here...

Thats really odd, I did the drawing in my 2017installation, but my machine tries to open it in the 2015 installion I have.
Ive attached a screenshot of what I'm getting.
on the left, it shows the properties window for the drawing showing that it should open in TC2017
on the right, it shows the window after right clicking the drawing.

I'd ignore the "Opens with" info, which is obviously unreliable. And you should always open a .tcw file from within TCad itself.

Install Dropbox on both computers and link the two, then you update a file on one computer it auto updates to the other.

Hi,

you may need to change/reset the default Windows file association to suit your needs.

Right click a tcw file, select Open with, then Choose another app.
Choose the TC version you wish to open your tcw files and check Always use this app to open tcw files.
    Finally click OK.

See attachments - which I hope are self explanatory.

Hi everyone
thanks for all help today, drop box may well be the way forward, thanks for that tip.
i'll certainly take a look at file associations as well.
The reason I was trying to open the drawing from the windows explorer route, to the drawings folder, was because even though the drawing was in the folder, it was not visible when accessed through TC2017.
I certainly seem to have an issue between my laptop & desktop settings which TurboCad dosent like.

Thanks again

How about the v2015 version I posted? When you download and save it (you can save it to any folder at all), is it visible in your 2017 File>Open?

I wonder if this has anything to do with it.  I noticed it a couple days ago, but haven't gotten around to posting it as a possible bug (or, what I thought most likely, an overlooked status that wasn't changed in a couple versions).

I've attached an image-+ of the original drawing, Which is on the flash drive which I uploaded yesterday, & I've also attached a copy of what my machine downloaded from Henry's post.

re: …Read Only…

Usually means there is a DWL file currently present when you opened the drawing. The DWL will have the same name as the drawing and prevents other people from saving edits of the file while you are using it. DWL's should go away when a drawing is closed, but can remain if there has been a crash. If there is a DWL, close the program and delete the DWL. Restart and see if the drawing can now be saved.

In Win 10 Task Manager, go to the "Details" page. You should find "DBAUTO~1.EXE" there. I don't have the "WelcomeSplashTest" because I never opted for the last update for 2015. To me, it was an unnecessary feature.

its not giving me the option, both my 2015 & 2017 installs are set to run as administrator,
as soon as i hit the ok button in the attached screen shot, i get the admin window asking to open in TC2015, yes or no. for some reason I'm not able to get a screenshot of this window.

Curious - what happens if you tick save file then in TC 2017's file open dialog, find the file and try to open from wherever Firefox saved it (which if memory serves is in a download folder).

If you still get the same problem doing it that way, then if it was me - I'd be tempted to delete (should have said in-install) 2017, and re-install 2017 using the full version from this forum http://forums.turbocad.com/index.php/topic,20690.0.html and see it that sorts out the problem as it sounds like a registry setting could have got screwed up - assuming one can find the original serial number and activation (though activation normally isn't necessary with a re-install) - the serial should work fine in the download probably 99% of the time.

Try downloading the file again. This time, opt to Save it rather than Open it. Then try to open it in TurboCAD.

Conventional wisdom sez one should always open in TurboCAD. I happen to agree with CW in this case.
