I f I draw a polyline as a series of straight lines to emulate a curving line, can I then convert that series of straight lines into curves?

Yes, I assume you mean to a Bezier or spline,  Using the convert to curve tool (in the format menu on my installation),

However, you may need to play around with the tolerance value, and the results may not always be what you are after, this tool creates a bezier which can have tight corners, so if the polyline corner is quite sharp for example 60 degrees, the Bezier itself can be sharp, worth having a play with though on a copy of the object.

## Edit ## just in case you haven't seen the convert to ark/polyline tool, it can create arcs from a polyline, but again one has to play with the settings.

Thanks Andy. I can see where I was going wrong now. I had tried using the convert to curve but obviously my tolerance value wasn't right and it ended up not looking much different to the polyline. Changing it to 200 did the trick (the line is long as it's part of a curve on a building). Thanks for your help!
