Hit and Miss Engine

This hit and miss engine is based on some engine plans that were created by David Kerzel. He allows their use for non commercial projects. As such, this was just modeled and rendered for fun. It was created and rendered with TC 2015 RedSDK. I couldn't get the clear white groundplane that I like to use so I did some post work in Photoshop. I have posted both for comparison. I hope that you like it. RedSDK provided a few issues as usual and there came a point that I swore I wouldn't look at RedSDK again, but it is like a drug that one just can't walk away from - so I persevered.

Great renders and subject. My preference is the one with two tone background. Do you know what the engine was used for?

Great rendering Don. Anyway this will make it into a tutorial?

These "hit and miss" engines can still be found, although they may only be used by collectors and hobbyist. There are several
examples of these running that can be found on YouTube. I like the sound of these when they are running.

Thanks for having a look and for your comments.

Jason,

I think this one is a bit too complex for a tutorial, although it is a good subject matter in general. I couldn't use the plans for tutorial creation since my tutorials are a commercial venture. Depending on the creator, he might give permission to use them as a basis if queried, but as I said, this one seems too intense.

Thanks for sharing Don, I forgot all about these engines. I worked on a number of these when I was a teenager. My father owned a gas station+fix it shop. I think we worked on about anything that ran. If I remember right most of them were Fairbanks & Morse engines. They were used in my part of the country to pump water from streams and ponds during the summer to irrigate and fill stock tanks. One thing I remember about them if you kept the oilers full and had a big enough gas tank you could start them and they would run almost all summer. Thanks for the great render and bringing back memories of my youth. Carroll

Excellent model as usual Don and great work with the Red materials, I must admit I never though someone would make the breakthrough in comparison to the lightworks materials. Love the chrome work, very impressive. Does the Turbocad version of RedSdk allow proper displacement maps as I know it is supposed to be one of the facets of the entirety of the rendering engine.

Terrific model and render Don, the slight roughness on the red wheels is a nice touch.
