2015 platinum speeding up rendering

When I am doing the quality renders it is painstakingly slow. A complex drawing in my TC18 platinum will render very nicely in 20-30 seconds. If I open that same drawing in 2015 version and even set materials to redsdk materials it takes well over a minute to render and while I am not real satisfied with the render I am sure with some time it could look good but not at this speed. I downloaded the latest video card driver and I set the anti aliasing down or up and whether I use ray tracing or global illumination in standard or fine it is still too slow. Are there settings I need to address to speed things up? When I trialed version 21 last year it seemed like it was faster then my 18 and now things are at a crawl. I am wondering if just buying the lightworks plugin will solve this. I am like many others here though and don't want to delay learning redsdk as it seems inevitable and I am still somewhat green with the program. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Here is a rendering done in18 platinum that took me less then 20 minutes to set everything and while its not great it is fine for what I am after. To do this in 2015 I am changing materials and trying to figure out the look but every re render takes so long to do it is ridiculous and it looks poor which I am sure can be better but takes forever to get right.

Sorry you are experiencing problems. Like anything new it will take some time to get to grips with it.

Material settings and render settings have a big impact on the time/quality. More so really than in Lightworks. We should hopefully have some basic settings soon that will help to speed up your renders.

One thing to try in the Advanced Render settings is to reduce the Auto Sampling Min to 8 and Max to 64 which should speed things up. Change the anti-aliasing to 0x for testing and to 4x for final render. Untick caustics also.

See image below: The auto min I upped to 16 for a drawing I rendered to reduce the noise in the render. 8 min  & 64 max are a good starting point according to Redway.

Thanks for the reply Darrel. I changed the settings and it did help some. Attached are two simple drawings made new in each program. 18 platinum with polished brass on the cylinder and the sphere is just black with no material applied. 22 platinum the cylinder is redsdk polished brass and again just black no material sphere. In 18 the quality render takes 1-2 seconds from wire frame, in 22 it took 48 seconds ray trace standard and 77 seconds ray trace fine (similar with global illumination). After changing settings to your suggestions it took 11 seconds in standard and 51 seconds in fine. An improvement but that is a lot slower then 18 which also had a nicer finish which like I have mentioned is likely just figuring out the redsdk settings. These are both with default lighting settings.

Thanks For testing.
So many factors we have to take into account. RedSDK works differently to Lightworks and speed may not get to a level until we have all the answers from Redway.

RedSDK is designed to be physically correct and for its Global Illumination quality. See Don's Water Glass and the specular highlights and reflections look more realistic than Lightworks in many ways - http://forums.turbocad.com/index.php/topic,16192.msg94610.html#msg94610

I will continue to play with it as I find time. I just don't have time now and frustration sets in when I can draw something up and then waste lots of time that before was so quick. I may just end up getting the light works plugin so I can work with the program easier till the rest falls into place. My laptop is also getting old but works great so not really wanting to upgrade that yet but I am sure a newer setup would be faster also. Thanks again.

So I went ahead and purchased the lightworks plugin. Quality render time is now faster then the blink of an eye. So instead of learning redsdk stuff I will just continue over the next few years with lightworks until the redsdk works for me.  So for anyone that is having any rendering speed issues, even on a 7 year old small laptop the lightworks plugin is blazingly fast compared to the redsdk render modes.

Rendering can be done in 2015 - just now you have to render using RedSdk (or purchase the lightworks plug-in),  see this post by Travis (of IMSI) for an explanation about lightworks.  http://forums.turbocad.com/index.php/topic,16233.msg95258.html#msg95258

Andy,

Thank you for your reply.
I have found it out and must say It works much faster as before,  :D
But for rendering my older files I have to change the materials . :-[
Kind regards
Leo
