Just learning more about hdri from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-dynamic-range_imaging so has there ever been a cad primer on using hdri?

I've tripped over a few on searching, but I put it in the "what for?" basket.  As Wikipedia explains, it has to be compressed to be displayed onscreen and in print material.  It reminded me of taking days to render 24-bit scenes with POVray with 486s back in the early '90s, then having to convert them to 8-bit targa images to display on a 256-colour VGA screen.   None of the 24-bit renderings that I did then survived the trip into the future to be casually glanced at on 24-bit screens in the here-and-now.   For the here-and-now, HDRI is more an artistic effect with exaggerated contrast than high-definition photorealistic imaging.

Yeah, that's a good question.  "It's a part of LightWorks' tools" is the most pertinent answer, I reckon.  In CAD, other reasons are artistic, not technical, and if you're not looking at an HDR-capable monitor (I suspect even if you are.  People our age are the macular degeneration generation, so it's likely be the visual equivalent of bat squeaks), they're the emperor's clothes.

If you fancy some reading, HDRI tips and tricks, whilst mainly about the photography side of things, I think it's a good read.

Lightworks has a variety of inputs, like cross maps and probes, With RedSDK one can generally use Longitude/Latitude maps, or cylinder maps, there are some free maps on Grabcad like this one .  And this little tutorial for creating 'fake' HDR images here.
