Title: Output slightly too small
Post by: matfry on December 04, 2018, 03:18:54 PM
I'm having trouble printing to scale on a HP Designjet 500 Plus (42") printer. For example, if I try to print a line 800mm across the roll, it comes out 798.5mm or so.

I bought the printer a while ago, and was told by the seller that they had the same problem with their set-up, so I don't think it's a computer related thing.

I can pretty well get over the problem by printing at 1.0022:1, which is easily done from within TurboCAD. The problem is worse printing a PDF file, as there doesn't seem to be that level of control over scaling on PDF software.

Am I correct in thinking that the encoder strip detects the print head position, therefore could be part of the problem? The problem is the same over the entire width of the output (any start or end point).

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Matt, welcome to the forum.

I sympathise.  But, I have never been one to trust printed output, to any degree.
If I may ask, why do you need to be that accurate?
In my working years I always looked to dimensions on the drawings themselves, for reference.
To be on the safe side, I always added the phrase "Do Not Scale" to my drawings.

I hope this helps.

Regards Tim

Have you tried and done the following?

Firstly have you the latest drivers and firmware (Aug 7th 2018  :o ) upgrade for your printer - http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/HP-Designjet-500-Printer-series/25301/model/1834668

Have you tried the Plotter Manager, where you can set up the calibration of your printer/plotter. It has an 'Advanced Calibration' menu in the plotter that prints a series of lines and dots, then you have to feed that back through the plotter for it to scan. This is particular to each type of paper so we will have to do this when we change paper types, bond or mylar or whatever."

have you checked that the TC drawing sheet, is not larger than the margins of the HP paper size?

A google search link of problem / solution.

I have also needed 100% scaling (we would cut the paper and place it to fit as a drilling guide).

1. For the Viewport's setup, make the Box not visible and set the Scale to 1:1.
2. For the Printer setup, select the proper paper size and desired orientation for your printer and make sure the Drawing Sheet matches it (could be larger).
3. Also for Printer setup, make sure you've clicked on Get Margins from Printer after you've specified which printer you are using.

So long as your printable material is within the margins of the printer, you will get 100% scaling.
