Title: Locking work plane - step files
Post by: exdraftee on July 10, 2018, 03:16:52 PM
Hi,

Is it possible to lock the workplane in one orientation.

Also I am working for a client who has given me step files done in solidworks. I need to manipulate and return.

Should I convert to TC and work on or just work on in step format (only thing different seems to be the sizing e.g automatically comes as imperial).

After trying to save I get this error (see attached) -  I managed to save under the .STP type, however this made file go from 7mb to 32mb ???

Thanks
Brett

The error message is a  new one for me, but the single reason to use .stp is for neutral file transfer, that's all it's good for, 'keeping' files in that format is no benefit and wastes TC's smarts. Save copy as .stp when you need to pass it on to a non-TC user.

Thanks Murray,

Problem is it goes from about 16 mb to 32 mb with just a straight save.

Cheers

Unless it's causing a noticeable performance hit, a material difference to the file's manageability, that's pretty much academic.  I use pretty low-spec 2-in-1 tablets some of the time, and even they handle that sort of file without a noticeable difference to something up to 20Mb.  Does it take a noticeably longer time to load or import?

Hi,

Its more that I am exchanging files to China and I am limited to email attachments.

Thanks

I use hjsplit file splitter for exactly that, dating back to when we used floppies and 1.44Mb  (oh god I got old.  when did that happen?).  Not as convenient as dropbox, onedrive or ftp host, but a realistic solution to your problem.

TurboCAD's TCW format is Binary; the STEP format is ASCII (very inefficient).

Use Windows' built in archiver to compress the STEP file into a ZIP archive; it will reduce in size by 80% (approximately).
