Title: Cannot sweep helix
Post by: esger on December 07, 2017, 12:53:32 AM
When I try to draw a simple spring by drawing first a helix and than trying to sweep this helix with a small circle I  always get the pop up
that the object I want to create is self intersecting or invalid.
This is also the case when I make the distance between the coils very large in relation to the diameter of the circle that I try to sweep..

I wonder what I have to do to make it work.

have you tried using the revolve tool instead?

Sweeping circles should work just fine with helix, though personally I explode the helix once to a spline as normally I want to alter the ends (nodes) to be more 'spring' like (so the spring sits flatish on an object),    it does depend on what tool you use (sweep or rail sweep), how the circle is presented to the start of the sweep, and having sweep properties set correctly, do not use rigid sweep.

Rather than guessing -  can you please post a drawing so someone can check .

Here I sent you my test file.

If the circle not is close to the helix you will need to use rail sweep.

Don't know if the attached helps, but I added some notes inside the file.

Herman, If you are not aware: Back in January 2015, Henry Hubich created and shared a fairly comprehensive article on the subject of "Creating [Coil] Springs in TurboCAD".

You can find that Post here (http://forums.turbocad.com/index.php/topic,15862.msg92031.html#msg92031), on the Tips and Tricks Forum board.
